Uwa Ohiku
Meet the Partner
Uwa is a Senior Partner of Jackson Etti and Edu , with over twenty five (25) years specialist experience she handles the local IP portfolios of numerous blue chip international corporations based particularly in the US and Europe. She oversees the Trademarks, Patents & Designs and Domain Name Practice Areas of the firm.
Uwa contributed to the draft of the Trademark Bill before the National Assembly that would amend Nigeria’s Intellectual Property law and make it TRIPS (Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights) Compliant. She is a regular speaker at local and international seminars and conferences relating to Intellectual Property. She was a member of Committee of Experts, appointed by the Federal Science & Technology Minister in April 2011, to review the Draft Science, Technology & Innovation Policy’s compliance with Intellectual Property law.
Uwa was appointed a panel member of the US National Arbitration Forum in 2002 to arbitrate on the largest Domain Name dispute involving a well-known cable provider.
Uwa is a member of the WIPO Domain Name Panel and has worked on a number of domain disputes. She is the only Nigerian Panelist of the WIPO Domain Names Arbitration & Mediation Center and has been consistently nominated as a leading Nigerian IP practitioner by the Who’s Who Legal Publication. She also handled a major domain dispute involving Cable News Network, LL (CNN).
She chaired the panel on the review of Nigerian Draft Trademarks Act (2002) and was, under the auspices of US National Arbitration Forum, member of the INTA Anti-Counterfeiting Committee (2002-2004), INTA Bulletin Committee (2005-2007), and INTA Legislation & Regulation Committee (2012-2013).
